You may have noticed in our recent catalogs that we have acquired several books from the personal library of George Washington Bethune. These came to us through the Gardner Sage Library at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. Most volumes have embossed leather bookplates inside the front covers, and several have ‘Bethune’ embossed at the base of the spine.

Bethune was a preacher-pastor in the Dutch Reformed Church in 19th-Century America. He spent his career mainly in New York and Pennsylvania. He wrote several hymns, sermons, and contributed anonymously to Izaak Walton’s fishing guide The Compleat Angler.
In addition, we have one copy of his Orations and Occasional Discourses published in 1850 (not from his personal library).
